LineLand Blacktornprod Jam 3 Lookback
Okay, because the game jam is over, I wanted to take a look back at how I made this game.
So first off is the game idea itself. When I heard the theme was going to be "Less is More", I decided to make a game that I had in my head for awhile, a 1D game. Now I decided to make this in Pico-8 due to the fact that I like making games in it and I can make games quickly in it quickly than any other tool I use. I first started off with having the player move a pixel across a a line with the player and touch a green dot that took them to the next level. Next was the obstacles. To do this, I had red rectangles that would move depending on the level. Now you might be wondering "but there is no rectangles, only a row of red pixels that appear and disappear". what it is true that is how you view, the way they work is similar to how the King of LineLand from "Flatland" would view A Square as he passed trough lineland, as a point, or, if you would be looking on the side, a row. next was the the slow down mechanic, add this to add a little bit of spice to the game-play. To this blocks in those levels the value that tells them how much to move is also multiply by a variable called speed. When the play slows down time, the speed is changed into a decimal slowing down the object, for a short period of time. Now that I had the game-play down, how was the player suppose to now what do what? Well, after watching on how to do a proper tutorial in a game, I had it where more info on how to play the game was reveled as the player progressed. I then added a timer at the end because I felt like a "You Win!" message at the end wasn't statfiying enough so yeah. There was one last thing to make this game fill less empty, sound. I made a quick tune in the Pico-8 Tracker that would play on a loop.
So yeah that is how I made this game. If you have more questions or want to me to add more on how I made this, feel free to comment!
